The Five Greatest Artists of My Lifetime

Filed under: Backwords from Ace — Ace Backwords @ 7:55 pm

These are the five greatest artists of my lifetime (and this is just my opinion so don’t get your undies in a bundy — you probably got your favorites too).

For my money, the writer Charles Bukowski and the cartoonist R. Crumb are the two greatest artistic geniuses of the 20th century.  I liked virtually everything they produced. They had a purity of  vision.  Just about everything in their body of work had the ring of truth to it with virtually no bullshit.

In the second tier I put the musician John Lennon.  He was no doubt a genius, too.  But unlike Bukowski and Crumb he was a bit of a “mad genius” and he would occassionally throw in some serious bullshit along with his home truths.

In the third tier I put the writers Jack Kerouac and J.D. Salinger.  They were kind of one-shot wonders with “On the Road” and “Catcher in the Rye.”  But their one shots had such profound effects on millions of people that I have to include them in this list.

John Lennon

  1. I agree with the first four absolutely. Hunter S Thompson over Salinger for me. Dr. Gonzo was the R. Crumb/ J Lennon of letters…

  2. A view limited to an era. Narrow, but I can’t argue. They were all significant. I’d probably push Kerouac further down the list.
